The Pullman Porters
The Pullman Porters were the first Black Unionized Workforce in the U.S.
In 1925, A Phillip Randolph a labor and civil rights activist organized the porters into the first Black unionized workforce
in the U.S.
Pullman Porters worked on-call assisting passengers for tips and pay. Many made enough to send to family and save for children’s education
George Pullman, Founder of a group of sleeping car porters known as “Pullman Porters”
The Great Migration fueled the need for more Black sleeping car porters on passenger trains
